Wordsalad FAQ
Common questions, plus tips and shortcuts you might not know about. Tips are marked Tip.
Getting started
How do I make a word cloud?
Create a document, then open Words and tap the text row to type or paste your text. Wordsalad picks the words that matter most. Choose a shape, a palette and fonts in the inspector.
Can I use a file or a web page as the text?
Yes. In the text editor you can import a .txt or PDF file, or search Wikipedia and use an article's text. The new text replaces the old one when you save.
I don't have a text. Can Wordsalad suggest the words?
Yes. In Words, tap Topic Words and type a topic, like “summer in Sicily”. Apple Intelligence writes the words privately on your device. It needs a device that supports Apple Intelligence, with it turned on in Settings. The words replace your current text.
Where are my word clouds saved?
In the Files app, on your device or in iCloud Drive, wherever you choose. They save automatically, and Files shows a thumbnail of each one.
Words
Tip How do I keep two words together, like “New York”?
Join them with an underscore in the text: New_York. It shows in the cloud as one word, “New York”.
Tip How do I make a word bigger or smaller?
Drag it up or down in the Words list. Words at the top are bigger, and the first one is the biggest.
Tip How do I put one word in the middle, like a name?
Star it in Words, or touch and hold it in the cloud and choose Make Hero. The hero word goes in the middle of the shape.
How do I remove a word I don't want?
Touch and hold it in the cloud and choose Mark Forbidden, or tap its forbid button in Words. Forbidden words stay in the list, struck out. Tap the button again to bring a word back.
Why are words like “the”, “and” and “of” missing?
Wordsalad skips filler words (stop words). Turn off Remove Stop Words in Words to keep every word. Remove Numbers and Case Sensitive are in the same place.
Why did my changes to the word list disappear?
Editing the text, or the list options, builds the list again from the text. Finish the text first, then reorder, star and forbid words.
How many words can a cloud have?
The list holds up to 500 words. Words repeat until the shape is full, so even a short list fills the shape.
Colors, shapes and layout
Tip Can I change the color of a single word?
Yes. Touch and hold the word, open Colors, then pick one of the palette's colors or Other Color… for any color.
What does Shuffle do?
It lays out the words again with new angles, colors and fonts. Didn't like the result? Undo brings the previous one back.
Tip Can I change the colors without moving the words?
Yes. In Palettes, tap the palette that's already selected. Its colors are shuffled among the words, and the layout stays the same.
How do I get vertical or diagonal words?
In Layout, pick one of the eight orientations, from Horizontal to Dancing. Spacing, Size variation and Biggest word are there too.
Tip Can I draw an outline around the shape?
Yes, with Shape Outline in Layout. The line goes around the silhouette, behind the words, in the palette's first color. It isn't available with Fill the Page.
I changed the paper size and the words moved. Why?
Fill the Page follows the paper's proportions, so a new size lays out the words again. A silhouette keeps its words and is just fitted to the new page.
Can I make my own palettes or use my own fonts?
Yes, with My Palettes and My Fonts in Wordsalad Pro. Imported fonts are stored inside the document, so a word cloud you share keeps its fonts. Fonts larger than 15 MB, or whose licence doesn't allow embedding, can't be used.
I opened a shared word cloud and Wordsalad asks to replace a font.
That font isn't on your device. Accept to lay out the words with the suggested font, or tap Cancel to keep the cloud as it is.
Pin words
What are pin words?
Your own words, placed exactly where you want them, at any size, angle and color. The rest of the cloud flows around them. Pin words are part of Wordsalad Pro.
Tip How do I move, resize and rotate a pin word?
Tap + to add one, and tap a pin word to select it. Drag to move it, pinch to resize it, and twist with two fingers to rotate it.
Why can't I use emoji?
Emoji can't be laid out in a word cloud, in the text or in pin words.
iPad, keyboard and trackpad
Tip How do I zoom in on the cloud?
Pinch, or double-tap the page.
Tip Are there keyboard shortcuts?
- ⌘R Shuffle
- ⌘T Show Words
- ⌘E Export
- ⇧⌘P Edit Pin Words
- ⌘1 to ⌘6 open the inspector panes
- ⌘+, ⌘− and ⌘0 zoom in, zoom out and zoom to fit
- ⌘Z and ⇧⌘Z undo and redo
Can I undo a change?
Yes. Every change to a word cloud can be undone and redone.
Does Wordsalad work with a mouse or trackpad?
Yes. Words highlight under the pointer, and a secondary click on a word opens its menu.
Export and printing
Which export format should I choose?
- PNG for messages, social media and wallpapers.
- PDF for printing: words stay sharp at any size.
- SVG for design apps and cutting machines.
- Photoshop (PSD) for fine editing, with each word on its own layer.
- USDZ to see the word cloud in AR.
Tip Can I see how it looks on my wall before printing?
Yes. In Export, tap View on Your Wall. Your word cloud hangs on the wall in AR, in an oak frame at its real size.
Which paper sizes are there?
A4, A3, 30 × 40, 50 × 70 and 70 × 100 cm, portrait or landscape, in Size.
